Since the invention of the first DSLR around the turn of the millennium cameras have been getting more powerful, smaller and faster. As the technology has advanced we have started to see cameras moving down from digital compact cameras to tiny little things that can be integrated with other portable devices, the most common being mobile phones. For me this brings us into a really interesting space, everyone has a camera with them all of the time.

Now mobile phone cameras may not be the most powerful or well built cameras but they certainly are useful little things. If you can learn to work within its limitations you can get some good stuff. Nokia are bringing out a new phone called the N86, they even have a little advanced preview in dpreview (for those that don’t know they do a lot of bench testing of camera hardware). One of the things I have been quite interested in for a while is how you can make good images with a low quality camera, and the mobile phone is certainly a good place to start playing around with this idea. The iPhone is also bringing a new dimension into the digital phone photography world, with in-phone image editing apps. Some of these apps, although limited, can provide a wide range of different effects and if used well can completely negate the need to use a computer to edit the photos. Photos can even be published online directly from the phone, so the images may never need to touch a computer before they are published to potentially millions of people to see.

All the photos in this post have come out of my little Nokia 6300’s 2 mega pixel camera, and I wouldn’t have been able to capture any of them with out it.

We have just got back from filming in Doncaster for a few days, we have been filming for a promo for a children's centre in the area, more on this as the project develops.

We have just got back from filming in Doncaster for a few days, we have been filming for a promo for a children’s centre in the area, more on this as the project develops.

While we were away we needed to find somewhere to stay for a couple of nights as Doncaster is a bit far from Leicester for us to commute each day. We thought that we might try our hand at saving some money on hotel costs and asked a friend in the area to recommend us a cheap (but good) hotel.

This is not what we experienced. We’re not going to point any fingers but it was a bit like staying in a hamster cage. The rooms were clean, but tiny, but what did we expect for £30 a night per room. After the first night we woke up horrified to find that cars out side the hotel had been broken into. Fortunately we had taken all our gear into the rooms with us and we are of course insured but never the less losing our kit would have been more than a little irritating. We were lucky, our car wasn’t one of the ones with a broken window, probably because we didn’t leave anything on show. Some others weren’t so fortunate, as you can see by the photo with this post.

Lesson learned, you get what you pay for and hotels are like everything else, not to be scrimped on.

Our blog is now powered by Wordpress and hosted on our own server, this has been a big learning curve for us and has taken up every moment of time when we aren’t working on our clients projects. We have also added the ability to send newsletters from our site, if you fancy one you can sign up here. We want to keep our newsletters nice and fun with something useful, not only are we going to be giving away some really cool desktops to spice up your computer but we are going to get together a set of resources to help people learn about the most effective ways to use digital media to enhance their business.

During the site update we have added a new string to our digital bow in the form of a new photography section. We have been working hard on a series of commercial portraiture jobs lately. The photo you see to the right is an image of a young up and coming entrepreneur called Luke. He is the managing director of a company called YQ Vending. We expect to see big things coming from him soon.

We would like to say a big thank to Doxmart who have been a really big help to us in during this time. They have helped us with all kinds of problems with the gremlins that live in the internet and break things when you’re not looking, from giving us tips on the best way to do things to making helping us make our mailing list and blog work. Thanks guys.

The gig itself going on until one in the morning at Sumo, a venue they have been playing at since the very early beginnings. Having been such a large catalyst in the Leicester music scene we felt that this final gig needed to be recorded. We were there with our SLR and a wide angle lens.

It has been a busy couple of weeks here at the Media Renegades studio, we have been working hard to get our new website finished and online whilst meeting our all other deadlines. We hope that you like the new look of our blog, and will take some time out to explore our new site as well. It’s not completely finished yet, but we have been saying all along that we will get it nicely rounded off for January, which we should be on target for.

The pic that you see above is a shot we snapped quickly whilst at Rockingham racing circuit. We were there working on a project for Road User Education (RUE), who had been left in a bit of a pickle by another production company who had used some footage from a Microsoft game that they couldn’t get clearance for. Fortunately we were able to come up with a solution to the problem; to create our own video footage treated in the style a video game. All it involved was a quick visit to Rockingham, Europe’s fastest racing circuit, for a really quick shoot. Then we had a quick sit down with Chris from Rockingham who let us go though some of their own promotional footage which they were kind enough to let us use for this production. All this combined meant that we were able to produce a really nice piece for RUE within the time frame and budget.

Keep checking back for updates, we should have a lot more coming soon.
