Road User Education is an organisation that promotes road safety among young people across the UK. RUE was recently involved in a project in London in which young people promoted road safety through making short films. We were late to become involved with this project as we were approached after the young people had already created their videos. One video contained a scene with some footage of a computer game. RUE had approached the computer game′s makers to get permission to use the footage, but unfortunately they eventually declined.
This is where Media Renegades initially came in. We were contacted and asked if we could do anything to help. We considered our options and came up with a solution - to recreate the computer game scene ourselves. To do this we arranged to visit Rockingham Racing Circuit, who kindly agreed to help with the project. We spent an afternoon on the track shooting footage to use, and then used this along with stock footage kindly provided by Rockingham to recreate the unlicensed computer game scene. This was achieved with a mixture of clever editing and a lot of image stylisation in post. We then added a computer game inspired on-screen-display complete with an animated speedometer and rev counter to finish off the ′game look′. Take a look at the video on this page to view the final student film.
Our work on the project did not stop there. We carried out general post production tasks on all of the student videos, making sure the sound was level throughout and amending the credits as requested. Finally we authored the videos to DVD and uploaded them to YouTube, ready to be distributed by RUE. Graham from RUE was very pleased with the results, and we look forward to working together again in the future.
